Recently we found our way to Germany to join A. Lange S?hne at the Classic Days at Schloss Dyck. This picture-perfect location welcomed many classic cars in pristine condition. Upon our arrival, we found our way to the House of Lange'. Here we joined the other guests for the program of the day and launch of the Lange 1 Daymatic.House of Lange at the Classic Days Schloss DyckClassic Days Schloss DyckStarting with a relaxing stroll around the exhibition area on the museum island, right next to the castle was already amazing. This is where all the masterpieces are on display, that participates in the Concours d'Eleganza. All cars are categorized from A to I, each with its own class covering ca [...]
Namaste, downward dogs, its time for This Week in Watches.Welcome to This Week in Watches for August 3, 2019.? I cant really complain about the heat this week because, lo and behold, things have moderated.? I cant talk about the new Corvette anymore because this is a watch site and I played that card last weekend.? So, I should probably just talk about watches.? Youve now come to know this paragraph as the rant portion, but theres no pain in my game this week.? You see, I currently have four watches in for review (one is the Orient Kamasu we published this past week) and guess what?? Theyre all?really good and that made me realize, despite all the collective moaning that goes on, were living [...]
Ahoj, hodinky kolektory Its This Week in Watches for July 27, 2019.So, were now in full vacation season mode here in Europe.? That means crowded airports, perhaps time for boring DIY jobs, and other fun activities.? I suppose a lot of these holidays leave a lasting impression after their culmination.? But I was recently thinking back on last weekends Moon Landing 50th Anniversary.? For sure, the mission and the actual landing represented incredible milestones, but think about what came afterwards.? Can you imagine having blasted off to the moon, either walking on it or orbiting it (lets not forget Mr. Collins), and then returning to home?? Forgetting the quarantine period post-touchdown, thi [...]
Gruss Gott, watch Sammler, its time for This Week in Watches for July 13, 2019.Ah yes, and were back this week with a look at all the news thats occurred over the last half fortnight.? Do you want to know something?? No?? Too bad because this is my space.? Ive become a bit of a rabid fan of cricket and have kept abreast of all things during this years World Cup that will come to an end tomorrow.? Will England or New Zealand claim victory tomorrow?? Lets see, but I will be watching from a barstool in an Irish pub somewhere strangely, British pubs just dont seem to make it outside out of Britain with quite the regularity of those houses or booze from the enterprising Irish.? But did you know [...]
Hey, hey, hey, it's This Week in Watches for April 28, 2019.For many out there, you're coming off of school holidays surrounding last week's Easter Weekend.? That meant egg hunts, chocolate (I used to like those Cadbury Eggs one of them was enough for me), candy, environmentally unfriendly green plastic grass to line those Easter baskets, and food.? If forced to rank the big holidays in terms of food, I'd put Easter dead last.? No matter where in the world I've been, it's always full of things like ham, smoked fish, and other things that make me feel pretty damn unhealthy.? Anyhow, one thing I do like about Easter are the colors.? Pastels rock!? But getting back to the matter at hand, let' [...]
If a book to be written about the history of German watchmaking from the beginnings until today, and a watch to be selected for the cover the result would be simple. Unequivocally the A. Lange Sohne Lange 1 would take that spot. I can't think of any other timepiece that had such an impact on the industry as a whole than this one model. The Lange 1 was and still is the design inspiration for dozens of other brands. The technicality of the movement, albeit not the most complex, is the blueprint for movement designers. The status of the Lange 1 is unquestionable, and it just so happens that this very icon is celebrating its 25th birthday this year. Yes, only 25 years since the Lange 1 emerged f [...]
When A. Lange S?hne present their novelties they always do so with a modest amount. This year was no exception apart from the fact that they announced to launch a new Lange 1 each month up to its 25th anniversary in October. But as those are yet to be released, so lets have a look at their other novelty, the new Zeitwerk Date.Another anniversary for A. Lange S?hneBesides the Lange 1 there is another occasion for A. Lange S?hne to celebrate. This year is the 10th anniversary of the Zeitwerk, which was first launched back in 2009. Where A. Lange S?hne is known for their big date, the Zeitwerk is one of the few watches out there which comes with a large digital time display. It looks beauti [...]
When you receive an announcement about a new watch from A. Lange S?hne you know you can expect something stunning. It's not often you actually get to see the watch before the official launch, which is today in Dresden, but on this occasion we did. And amazing it is in all its facets. Lets have a look at the new limited edition A. Lange S?hne Datograph Up/Down Lumen.About the DatographFirst launched in 2012 as a refined version of the classic column-wheel chronograph, the Datograph has been created in different versions through the years. Starting out as the Lange chronograph with flyback it has been upgraded with different complications. Current models either feature a power reserve indica [...]
There are always watches that are high on your wish-list while knowing you probably will never actually own one. Simply because its (far) out of budget or because they are only produced in limited numbers and hard to acquire. And sometimes its even both. But that doesnt mean you cant enjoy it in some way which is exactly what happened when we had the A. Lange S?hne 1815 Tourbillon with enamel dial for a few days.First of all, its a Lange. Not that this is a reason to buy one right away but simply put I am biassed when it comes to this brand. The designs and an incredible level of detail always impress me. And the same goes for this 1815 which impresses more the closer we look at it. But bef [...]
Believe me when I say I have one of the coolest jobs in the world. It actually doesnt feel like work, I am just occupied all day with something I am very passionate about. Fratello has been there since 2004, but it still excites me when I receive a package from A. Lange S?hne in my office. This time, I asked them if they could provide me with their Saxonia Thin in copper blue. An A. Lange S?hne Lange 1 would be my end-game for sure, but this Saxonia in 39?millimetres with a copper blue dial (looking very similar to aventurine glass) that they showed earlier this year in Geneva is so breath-taking, I had to have it. Even when it is for just two weeks.Saxonia Thin in Copper BlueThis referenc [...]
A pink gold chronograph with a black dial. To me, thats the perfect combination for a chronograph that can be worn during diners, on formal occasions but perhaps even with a nice pair of sneakers and a polo shirt. The A. Lange S?hne 1815 Chronograph in this article is not entirely new, but this combination of pink gold and black was introduced to us in Geneva, earlier this year. Actually, this combination already existed in 2004. Be it that the subdials were done in silver/off-white, a reverse panda dial if you wish. The 1815 chronograph changed a bit over time, like a slightly larger case (and with slightly I mean slightly, just 0.5mm) and an update on the movement. The current movement is [...]
When Anthony de Haas (Director of Product Development at A. Lange Sohne) started his job in Glashutte in 2004, he was welcomed by Walter Lange. Walter Lange explained to him that he would like to see a watch with stop seconds, like his ancestors did for their A. Lange Sohne pocket watches. Last year, in January 2017, Walter Lange passed away and Anthony de Haas thought of his wishes for a timepiece. The 1815 Homage to Walter Lange is exactly what he would have liked, ensured to us by Anthony de Haas. Walter Lange actually insisted on having a watch like this for a long time. Now, at the SIHH 2018, Lange presented us this watch with stop seconds in a 1815 case with a manual movement. There w [...]
Within the last two years, Ive found myself opening up to gold watches, including watches that are a combination of gold and stainless steel (bi-color). Actually, my first serious watch was a bi-color Omega Constellation. When I began collecting watches, I quickly shifted to stainless steel models, the occasional titanium watch and sometimes something PVD or DLC. Perhaps the most outrageous act of stainless steel is my Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Jumbo, a watch that has a price tag?that will buy you a full gold watch from many other brands.Buying Your First Gold WatchIn my watch collecting journey, Ive also bought gold capped and gold filled watches, but I didnt wear them often. Some left the [...]
Every once in a while we receive the question whether we could live with just one watch, and which watch that would be. You have probably also fantasized yourself of trading (all) the watch in your collection for just one watch. One Watch Only!In this article, we take a look at watches that we find interesting in a certain price bandwidth. From an entry-level mechanical Seiko to something haute horlogerie. Of course, our picks might change over time (or by the week) as new models are being introduced all the time (as in well over a week during BaselWorld 2017). However, if we?were going to pick only one watch, chances are quite big that wed select an iconic model. That said, only having one wa [...]
So its time for something completely different now Its weekend for us and probably most of our readers. Today we present you an easy to digest article. Going through our vast photo archive, we dug up the watch macro photo?A to Z. Some unpublished material or re-editited images. Taking a few detours to fill in the few missing brand names in the alphabet. Maybe an interesting quest for the upcoming Baselworld fair.Kicking it off with the A for A. Lange Sohne. We didnt want to zoom in too much as there is so much going on for this Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon.A. Lange Sohne Datograph Perpetual TourbillonB for Blancpain L-Evolution Tourbillon Carrousel, limited to 50 pieces. Note the crazy l [...]
The SIHH 2017 is over and were left with mixed feelings. If all SIHH brands knew how to make us smile like A. Lange S?hne seems to be able to do every year, there wouldnt be any issues. This year, A. Lange S?hne showed their 1815 Annual Calendar watch, and it immediately became the talk of the exhibition.Walter LangeIt was a bit of an awkward moment, when A. Lange S?hne gave their presentation on all the new timepieces they have for us (and you) in store. Just a few moments before, we received the message that Walter Lange (92) passed away the day before. He spent his entire life dedicated to watches and was the man who helped building up A. Lange S?hne after Germany was reunited again i [...]
With only a day to go, 2016 has come to its end. It was a very interesting year for the watch industry and for watch collectors. The watch industry is currently going through a rough time, but still managed to come up with some very interesting watches this past year.State of the watch industry2017 will likely be an even tougher year for some brands, which means we haven't seen the end of the crisis in the luxury watch market yet. The trend will now be all about how creative brands are with their new collections and, just as important, the value proposition. In my belief, for many watch enthusiasts it has become more important that you indeed get a bit of value for your money instead of buyi [...]
ChronographsBefore we hit it with our top 10 chronographs overview, a few words about this list. A chronograph is one of the most popular complications (besides a date), and it is actually a very complex mechanism. It is the reason why some brands still dont have their own chronograph movement and use one from a third party.Chronograph ModuleYou might have heard about a chronograph module or add-on module. This means that theres a base movement for hh:mm:ss (and date), and a little additional movement module that is put on top of the base movement. A well-known module manufacturer is?Dubois Depraz. A brand like Audemars Piguet for example, uses their own in-house manufactured caliber 3120 mo [...]
A. Lange S?hne were the talk of the town with their new Zeitwerk Minute Repeater, but also introduced a very impressive line-up of other watches as well. The new Saxonia collection as well as the Datograph Perpetual are truly stunning watches, but they also gave their icon from 1994 a little upgrade: the Lange 1.Why touch an icon? It rarely works and makes eyebrows go up when shown to aficionados. What the Royal Oak Jumbo is for AP, the Calatrava is for Patek Philippe, the Speedmaster is to Omega and the Tank is for Cartier, is the Lange 1 for A. Lange S?hne. Now, 20 years after the introduction of the Lange 1, A. Lange S?hne decided it was time to slightly modify this watch. Lange already [...]
Just recently, I was in Dresden to celebrate the 20th anniversary of A. Lange S?hnes Lange 1 watch and the introduction of the Lange 1 Tourbillon Handwerkskunst (more here). A few weeks earlier, A. Lange S?hne introduced five sets of Lange 1 watches during the Watches Wonders exhibition in Hong Kong.Lange 1 20th AnniversaryThese five sets of A. Lange S?hne Lange 1 watches are limited to 20 pieces each, a number that corresponds the 20th anniversary of the Lange 1 watch itself. Each set contains of a watch for him and a watch for her. The latter one is set with 64 diamonds in the bezel, all Top Wesselton VVS quality. The gents versions have the normal 38.5mm diameter size and the ladies wa [...]
